School Theme - Painting the Earth Green!

My Side of the MountainThe theme of the 2011-2012 school year is “Painting the Earth Green -- The Woodlands Way”. We invite all members of our world: parents, staff and students, to celebrate our guiding principles and Time for Living principles.

We began the 2011-2012 school year with "One School, One Book", and we all read Jean Craighead George's book "My Side of the Mountain." The main character, Sam Gribley, exemplifies all of our Time for Living character principles, as he learns to lives in tune with the earth for an entire year. Sam builds a home in the woods and lives in harmony with the animals and individuals that he encounters.

As a component of Time for Living, we will continue to have the small families (students 1st – 8th grade are in multi-age groups lead by an adult). The small families will meet about six times during the school year and students remain with the same small family until they graduate. A family project will be introduced through the small families.

Guiding Principles

Woodlands School has six guiding principles:

  1. Time for Living – Instilling respect and responsibility toward self, others and community; Time for Living, or "TFL," is how we define our character education program.
  2. Diversity (geographic, racial, cultural, socio-economic) – Valuing and honoring the needs of all.
  3. Discovery-based Learning – Problem-solving and learning by doing.
  4. Integrated Specialized Curriculum – Making connections through education that is interdisciplinary and collaborative.
  5. Excellence for Every Child – Helping students grow toward their potential.
  6. Life-long Learning – Preparing the student for everlasting enjoyment for meaningful learning.
