Lunch program - Thursday, April 26, 2012

Dear Woodlands Families,

The Woodlands School Board of Trustees has been studying continuing the hot lunch program at Woodlands School.  The school currently loses between $3,000 and $5,000 per year on hot lunch service.  This is because the school is required to order a minimum of 100 meals per day from the vendor, but we sell only about 85.  The other reason the lunch program loses money is that some of our students receive free and reduced lunch, but the payment we receive from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for those students does not cover the full cost of the meal.  We have tried three vendors in the last five years and we have tried alternative pricing and purchasing for meals this year.  The committee studying the hot lunch program is recommending that it be discontinued and all students be required to bring cold lunch.  The school will keep limited food at the school and provide peanut butter sandwiches to students who forget their lunch.  The Board of Trustees will be considering the recommendation to discontiue the hot lunch program at its May 9 special meeting to approve the budget for the 2012-2013 school year.  If you would like to share opinions on this issue prior to the meeting, please forward them to Brad Hoeschen at bhoeschen@chernovlaw.com. Maureen Sullivan at principal@woodlands-school.org or David Abelson, committee chair, at davidabelsonmdsc@aol.com.

Thank you.

Welcome to Woodlands School Website

Woodlands School is an independent charter school that guides four-year old preschoolers through eighth graders to achieve their full potential. The charter school celebrates diversity, nurtures creativity, and encourages independent thinking. It fosters respect for one another and inspires life-long learning skills.

Woodlands School is a unique, educational community designed around the holistic needs of students. In addition to core classes taught by dedicated professionals, the charter school offers specialty classes in Library, French, Art, Music, and Physical Education. In keeping with its supportive environment, the school also offers Supportive Services and before/after-school care in its Extension program.

Woodlands School offers an innovative educational program of excellence for the whole child in a multi-cultural environment that prepares the child for lifelong learning in a rapidly changing environment.

Woodlands is an environment in which teachers, parents, and children share the responsibility for learning. Students are encouraged to discover, explore, and create in order to develop the attitudes and skills necessary for effective living. Prime consideration is given to developing moral and spiritual values, a positive attitude toward life, and a healthy self-concept. The school design reflects the belief that learning to live with a flexible environment and an openness to change fosters in the child the ability to cope with an increasingly complex body of knowledge and a rapidly changing society. The school philosophy emphasizes that involvement with people of many races and cultures enriches the growth of human understanding. Education founded on these beliefs gives rise to both a happy, sensitive, creative child and an adult who, while intellectually free, is morally and socially responsible.
